Australia Rediscovering Australia Road Trips Travel Warrnambool

Discover Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool: Moving further and further away from the desert, we were getting closer and closer to the Great Ocean Road…

As you already have probably figured out, Warrnambool was our next stop. A quick two-night layover, to get rest and to visit some of the attractions this city has to offer. Now the town is little as well as it’s the last town on the Great Ocean Road, although in our case, it was the first of many cities to come along our path on this road trip. In spite of the relatively small size, this town had a lot to offer. For the food guru, there are a few good restaurants, my pick is the Pickled Pig (restaurant), even though I haven’t been it’s considered to be the #1 restaurant in town (a bit pricey). Fantastic ocean views for those who love the beach, be careful where you swim, the current can be a bit strong (swim between the lifeguard flags). Of course, the main attraction that many people tend to visit is a place called “Flagstaff Hill.” I would describe it as an interactive museum that comes to life during the day and night. Its primary purpose is to take you back in time to the 19th century Warrnambool, a small port town, slowly growing and becoming a massive hub of information on shipwrecks around the state of Victoria. During the night, the museum presents a light and sound effects show (buy tickets in advance) that plays out well against the old preserved architecture, telling you the stories of Australia’s rich maritime history.
